Top 25: A Response to the Atrocious College Football Playoff Rankings
Language warning, the CFP boils my blood like no other
Hello everyone, I am mostly taking this week off as a brief lull before the college basketball season gets underway next week.
This is just my top 25, something I have been doing all season (even the last two weeks when I did not post it). The College Football Playoff rankings were absolute shit, but that’s no surprise.
Here are the only rankings you should trust.
1.) Georgia (-)
2.) Cincinnati (-)
3.) Michigan State (+4)
4.) Oklahoma (-1)
5.) Alabama (+1)
6.) Oregon (+2)
7.) Ohio State (-2)
8.) Wake Forest (+1)
9.) Michigan (-5)
10.) UTSA (+2)
11.) Notre Dame (+8)
12.) Oklahoma State (+6)
13.) Baylor (+7)
14.) Auburn (+10)
15.) Coastal Carolina (-)
16.) Texas A&M (+5)
17.) Houston (+8)
18.) Louisiana (+5)
19.) SMU (-9)
20.) Ole Miss (-7)
21.) BYU (NEW)
22.) Kentucky (-11)
23.) Fresno State (NEW)
24.) Appalachian State (NEW)
25.) San Diego State (-11)
Some thoughts:
The top two should be so easy. Georgia has been the best team in college football all year and Cincinnati has the (arguably) best win of any undefeated team, winning convincingly on the road against a Notre Dame team that has not lost again. The last two games have not been pretty for the Bearcats, but “not pretty” also meant winning by three scores against Tulane. They won, and have proven to be an elite team. This isn’t hard unless you are a farce of a committee who simply shills out for the big brand teams because you are a bunch of fucking losers pretending to do anything remotely smart. Anyway.
Michigan State has to be in the top four for now after an impressive comeback victory against what I believe is still a very good Michigan team. Kenneth Walker is a DUDE and I am legitimately excited to see this team face Ohio State later this month. Please don’t lose @ Purdue Spartans, I know it’s tempting.
The four spot could be argued a lot of different ways and it’s the spot I am least sold on here. While I think it is very funny that Oklahoma was ranked eighth, I will leave the Sooners in here for now. They look better against Caleb Williams and have won all their games. Lose even once, though, and I don’t think there’s a road back in for Oklahoma, at least in my eyes.
Alabama at two is a fucking joke. The Ole Miss win now looks worse, and, despite the committee’s best efforts, the Crimson Tide have indeed lost to a two-loss Texas A&M squad. I think outside the top four is more than fair for what Alabama has done so far, and I think it needs to beat Georgia to get it. Obviously, the committee does not, shocker.
I had been putting Ohio State above Oregon despite the head-to-head because the Buckeyes were murdering fools on the field while the Ducks struggled. Now, after a closer-than-expected win against Penn State and Oregon handling business, I think the teams are in a comparable spot once again, and the H2H has to be taken into account.
Wake Forest is a win-and-in team, no doubt about it. Some big games lie ahead, starting with North Carolina this weekend (Wake is a damn underdog here), and I’m hoping the Deacons prove something on Saturday.
If Cincinnati hadn’t been ranked at No. 6, I would still have something to yell about because unranked UTSA is a fucking joke. There are six, SIX, undefeated teams left. You can’t make room for all six in the top 25? No, sorry, two three-loss teams in there, one of which is ranked fucking 17th. I am so sorry Roadrunners, you deserve so much more.
Teams 11-14 are me correcting myself for a lot of programs I thought were worse than they actually are. The big one for me is Auburn, who actually kind of rocks. Bo Nix is a nutcase, and I love watching him. I kind of hope he torches A&M just to make the Alabama placement look even worse.
Houston beat SMU in a total banger and it deserves a lot of credit for that. I need to stop falling in love with a weird team and putting them in the top 10. It seems to always end in an immediate loss. *Checks my current No. 10 team* oh no.
I don’t have a lot of thoughts in the bottom section of these rankings. Fresno State is a lot of fun and took down previously undefeated San Diego State, while Appalachian State keeps avenging the bad Louisiana loss. Also, it was fun while it lasted, Kentucky.

I am not sold on Oklahoma. You’re right about them… lose and they are done.
I definitely think Cincy should be top 4. If the Bearcats win out, they should be in the top 4, no question. They played at Indiana and at Notre Dame and won. They challenged themselves and deserve the credit.
Alabama should be out of the top 4, and they NEED to beat Georgia or they are out!
Oregon should be ahead of Ohio State right now. If they both win out, Ohio State will have the better resumé and I believe if Ohio State wins out, they are in the playoffs. H2H is important, especially if resumés are close. I think Ohio State’s body of work would trump Oregon’s if it came down to those 2 at the end. If H2H was the only thing that mattered, then schedule a bunch of cupcakes and assure yourself of not losing early. And nobody wants that.
It hurt Ohio State that Penn St lost to Illinois. I think Penn St is really good. I think that was a good win on Saturday night. I don’t think there is any doubt that Penn St puts a premium on the Ohio State game. They know if they wanna win the Big Ten, they have to beat the Buckeyes.
The Buckeyes certainly need TTUN and Sparty to keep winning. That will help.
Just my opinions
